Want to become a Curriculum Designer or Instructional Designer but don't know where to start??

Come open up a world of work opportunities with your teaching skills! By the end of this course, you will have the knowledge, skills, resources, and connections to work remotely or on-site, full-time or part-time with the educator skills you already have.

What teachers are saying!

I'm Ali. I've been where you are and I know how to successfully go beyond the classroom.

EDUCATOR - SR. INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER - EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT - LEARNING STRATEGIST - DIRECTOR - WIFE - MOM - AND A BIG FAN OF ICE CREAM

Do you have the same concerns I had?

  • Wanting to work beyond the walls of your classroom?
  • Feeling like your opportunities are limited to teaching?
  • Vaguely familiar with the role but not sure what the job would actually be like?
  • Wanting to work with curriculum and instruction but knowing a good program + life expenses =  over $100,000?
  • Not wanting to take years to apply to grad school, complete course work, and then look for a job?

As a teacher, I had ALL of these thoughts and feelings. Now that I have been an instructional designer for years and now that I hire instructional designers, I know the truth.

The truth is:

#1 Great teachers make INCREDIBLE Curriculum Designers and Instructional Designers. #2 The best way to learn Curriculum Design and Instructional Design is by DOING it. #3 The best way to get a job in these roles is to show them your skills, not a pricey piece of paper (aka diploma).

Testimonials

Here's what teachers are saying!

"I am SO enjoying it!"

Kristy L. Former teacher. Now an Instructional Designer at an ed-tech company!

This course has done several things for me. One: helped me realize that instructional design IS what I want to do. Two: Given me tangible examples and templates to use to build a course. Three: Connected me with opportunities! Four: Shown me what IDs actually DO and all of the ways they do it. Five: Opened my mind up to the opportunities available AND made my brain start whirring with ideas. I am SO enjoying it!

"Transitioning out of teaching is so attainable."

Raven W. Former teacher. Now working at an ed-tech company!

"This course helped me realize that transitioning out of teaching is so attainable. Most of the skills I need to do something else I already have."

"Inspired. By far, one of the best courses I have taken."

Andrea R. Former teacher. Now an independent freelancer!

"Ali's course has shown me avenues I never thought of beyond the classroom. It has inspired me to keep growing and learning. Her course is very "hands-on" and practical, and it gives me guidance on how my teacher skills transfer into other opportunities. It is, by far, one of the best courses I have taken."

But what does a Curriculum and Instructional Designer actually do?

Imagine working with your educator skills... and no behavior management, no grading, no taking attendance, etc.

Have you ever noticed how some learning experiences and resources are engaging, effective, and enjoyable while others really aren't?! Curriculum and Instructional designers are the magic sauce behind the scenes who 1- determine how learners will learn something best and 2- create engaging and enjoyable learning resources! (Yep, just like you do as a teacher in the classroom!) They make learning effective, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone at education companies, non-education companies, universities, as freelancers, and more!

How to become a Curriculum Designer or Instructional Designer

Without needing to go back to grad school!

As a teacher, you're a pro at creating amazing learning experiences and resources! You can do even more of that as a Curriculum Designer and Instructional Designer and say goodbye to behavior management issues, grading and score entry, recess duty in the snow (I hated being cold out there!), and so much more.

The problem? Some teachers assume the only way to land these jobs is to take years going back to grad school and forking over thousands and thousands of dollars in tuition to get yet another degree.

The reality is that companies who hire Curriculum and Instructional Designers care more about your skills, ability, and experience than they care about whether or not you have a piece of paper (degree) that says you sat through classes (or clicked through them) to learn about "curriculum and instruction" or instructional design "theory".

Instead, they want to *see* what you can do.

The other problem? You've heard of curriculum and instructional design but you're never seen what they actually do for work and taught how to land a job in it.

Well, the truth is grad school doesn't teach you that; exposure, experience, and training do.

My final 2 years of teaching, I was so ready for something more. I CRAVED growth! I then prepared myself in a way that led me to land my first job as a curriculum and instructional designer without needing to go back to grad school.

Now, a handful of years later, not only have a been a curriculum and instructional designer for education companies, corporate companies, as an independent freelancer, and a director of a learning resources production agency, I hire Curriculum and Instructional Designers too. I know what helps you land these jobs.

After so many teachers asked me how they could become a Curriculum and Instructional Designer, I decided to create this course to guide you step-by-step to become one too!

Now, a handful of years later, I hire people in these roles!

After so many teachers asked me how they could become Curriculum and Instructional Designers, I decided to create this course to guide you step-by-step to become one too!

I have so many good things to say about this course! The best thing about this course is the instructor. Ali is so genuine in her mission to help teachers transition to a new field. As a teacher who has been considering careers outside the classroom for years, I can attest that Ali has been where you are and knows exactly how you feel. She has successfully transitioned beyond the classroom and she knows how to help you do the same. Ali is able to show you how what you're already doing in the classroom will easily translate to becoming an instructional designer. I highly recommend this course for anyone considering this career beyond the classroom. You will learn about the ID process, software they use, and get resume and portfolio templates and tips. All of this is well worth the investment. Even if you decide ID is not for you, the information in this course will help you be a better teacher. It will also open your eyes to other opportunities outside the classroom besides ID and help you start to recognize ways to find them! You'll also have access to questions and answer sessions with Ali and a private FB group to share resources and connect with others in the course. So, what I'm saying is, sign up now. You won't regret it.

As a veteran teacher looking to make a transition into a new field, I was extremely lost. I've been searching for advice for a couple of years, but never found any clear cut answers. I really had no idea what I would do once I left education. I wasn't even sure that my experience would translate into the business world. I stumbled across Ali's courses and was very intrigued by what I saw. I took some of her online quizzes and started FINALLY develop some sense of a plan. I listened to her podcast, and decided she was talking directly to me! I signed up for one of her courses, Find Your Next Dream Job, and my excitement started to really build. I knew there was a role for me out there. I was especially intrigued by what Ali had shared about instructional design, and knew it was an avenue I had to explore. A few weeks later, I signed up for the course "From Teacher to Instructional Design." I've begun to build a portfolio and get some real world experience. I'm taking my two real loves, education and technology, and using them to create elearning, blended learning, and training assets. I can see my skills growing and I know that with each part of the course I complete, I am redesigning my future. The courses I've taken through Teacher Transition is a real investment into my future, and I know it is well worth it!

For the past few years I have been wanting to get my feet wet in instructional design. I didn't have a clear picture of what instructional design was but I knew I liked developing lesson material. I was hesitant about even applying for an instructional design position because I wasn't sure if I could speak their lingo or if I had the skills they needed. After working in the Teacher Transition course I have a clearer understanding of what instructional design entails, I am more confident in how to communicate with others in the field and I feel more confident in scheduling future interviews. It's clear immediately that Ali has been in the shoes of a teacher transitioning to a new role - and been in a job that she knows she needs to move from but it's so hard to know how to make the transition sometimes! She gets it and has been there. Just knowing that we have someone leading the class who has had such a familiar experience and SUCCEEDED makes me feel hope and encouragement. (And by the way - the materials she's designed and the look of this are fantastic and a great example. She CLEARLY knows what she's doing! She walks you through things in a way that I hope to model one day as well!)

FAQ

  • Don't I need a degree in Instructional Design or Curriculum and Instruction to get a job in it?

Nope. I didn't have a degree in instructional design and you don't need one either. BUT there are things you DO need to land a job in these roles and we'll go over those things in this course and provide you with the tools and resources you need for that.

  • Do I need to complete the course by a certain time and how long do I have access to it?

Complete the course as fast or slow as you'd like. Go at the pace that works best for you.

  • How can I know you're qualified to teach this course?

I'm glad you'd ask!! I learned this trade in one of the best settings out there that you can learn it in: an instructional design agency! My teacher skills mixed with the real-world experience was a dynamite combo! I guest lecture at the university level teaching their grad students how to do Curriculum Development and Instructional Design. Their instructors have also requested resources I have for their grad school course content so that their masters-level students would be able to more effectively and efficiently do this kind of work and land jobs in these roles. I also direct a learning production agency where I work with and lead incredible instructional designers and curriculum developers and, yes, where I have hired them as well.

  • What specific tools and resources will I learn to use?

This course is about more than learning a tool or specific software. You will go through the process of creating learning resources that is used at companies. You will learn about the most relevant and in-demand skills and tools that companies look for when hiring. The course is not as focused on a specific software as much as it is focused on exposing you to the most important software to know, having you experience/go through the process that is used at companies to actually create learning resources with the software you select, and getting you prepared to confidently apply and land a job in the type of role you'd like at the type of company you'd like.

  • What if I'm not ready to get a different job?

No problem at all! This course will let you know what the field is like and everything you need to get a job in it. You can apply whenever you'd like! It will simply help you be confident and fully prepared to take that next step whenever you would like to! And PS what you will learn will help you be a better teacher in the classroom as well.

  • What if I lack confidence in my ability to do this?

This is one of the best reasons to sign up! We'll be connected personally, you won't have to "wonder" about what instructional design really is anymore, and you'll see which job opportunities and work settings are opportunities where your personal strengths and skills can shine! There is such a variety of opportunities in the field and you'll see the right match for your personal gifts and strengths! And I'll be here to coach, encourage, and advise you all along the way! You're not doing this alone!

  • How much would a master's degree in this area actually cost?

If you want to do an online program, one of the least expensive and popular options is WGU's program. Most students graduate within 4 semesters for $13,000. (Note: Some of the people in our course have graduated from WGU with that degree and then signed up for this course because even after graduating with a master's in ID they had no idea what IDs actually do for work. But hey, they learned a lot about theory and assessment.) ;) If you want to go to an on-site program, one that is well respected is Indiana's. If you were to get accepted to theirs or another a really good program and attend on-site, your tuition plus life expenses would likely come to over $100,000. Yep, really. Want to see it for yourself? Here are the details from Indiana's website: https://studentcentral.indiana.edu/pay-for-college/cost-of-iu/estimated-cost.html Pro-tip: Keep in mind that after getting a degree, you would then need to go to the work of landing a job. Or, you could save that time andd money and we'll get right to the end goal.

  • Should I "shop around" before joining this course?

I've already done that for you. Here are the details. There are a small handful of courses out there related to this one and here is how they compare. MADE FOR TEACHERS: This is the only one made specifically for teachers with instruction that builds on your teaching experience, and which shares job opportunities where companies specifically WANT former teachers. CERTIFICATION: Only this course and one other offer multiple certification options. COST: The other options range from $1,497 to $4,995. GUEST SPEAKERS: This is the only course that has a variety of former teachers who now work in this field in a variety of roles who will teach you from their personal experience of going beyond the classroom, and yes, you can connect with them personally and network with them as well! They are so helpful!

  • If I’m not a teacher will I still benefit from this course?

Absolutely! We have course members who have never been teachers and they benefit from the course every bit as much as others. The fields they work in range from Human Resources to Training for large companies. Course enrollees also land jobs with a variety of companies, not solely education companies. The companies course enrollees now work for range from non-profits, to large corporate mechanical companies, to universities, and more. You will learn the spectrum of work opportunities that are out there in the field of Instructional Design so you can identify and hone in on the type of ID job you want. You’ll learn about and *experience* the process that is used in instructional design, along with the most important ID tools and resources you need to know. You’ll also receive the customizable templates for a resume, cover letter, and portfolio to effectively take your next steps into the actual ID workforce. The aspects of the course that relate to the education field and an education background simply give context to examples in the course and are not a limitation of the course to solely educators but rather more of an additional element. We love having course enrollees from different fields as they bring a variety of strengths with them from their different backgrounds and experiences! Trust me, you are welcomed and appreciated for the background and experiences you bring with you to the course!

  • What is the refund policy?

I am so certain that you will progress through completing this course and the activities in it that it has a 30-day Progress Guarantee. If you learn nothing through the course and gain no new skills or confidence through completing the activities, simply upload your work, let us know where/how you already learned all of this and we’ll process a full refund. I take your investment in this course seriously and am confident it will help you progress so your progress is absolutely guaranteed or your money back. Need more details? See the full refund policy here: https://teachertransition.com/refund-policies/

  • Where have course members landed jobs?

Better question- Where haven’t they landed jobs? Course members have landed jobs at corporate companies like Spotify, universities like Texas A&M, education companies, ed-tech companies, contacting jobs from home, opportunities with companies in the US and outside of the US as well, and more.

  • How long does it take to land a job?

This varies depending on many things. Some course members have landed jobs in a month and a half after signing up. Others haven’t started applying until many months later. If you need a job sooner rather than later, I recommend a dual approach of taking the course while applying to jobs and adding the skills you gain through the course to your resume and portfolio as you learn them.

  • Do I get a certificate with this course?

Yes, you will receive a professional development certificate upon completion of the course.

I've been a teacher for 15 years. I've enjoyed what I do and connecting with students. What I'm really passionate about is the strategy, the resources, the way we can build up our students in the learning process. I'm at a point where I'd like to have options for myself in the future should the need or want arise and this course has been a perfect setup for this. I am LOVING going through the design process of this and the creativity I'm getting to put into the portfolio being created. Ali has been so insightful, shares how the lingo from the world of an educator crosses over to the world of an instructional designer, amazing resources to help you process (and I'm sure she used the ID/ADDIE process herself in creating the course!) and is very engaged in the community build around this course and Teacher Transition overall. I'm really enjoying this course so far! Ali does a great job explaining how teaching skills can transfer to the ID setting. More importantly, she thoroughly lays out the language to use and portfolio pieces to create in order to explain HOW those skills transfer. I've always been tripped up by those things in the past, so Ali's coaching on them is super helpful to me now.

It has been easy to follow up with ADDIE model and your module that breaking down each model by letters is great! I like the template that you provided so that I can stop the video and start answering these questions in the template. Thank you for providing a web-source the eLearning Heroes (I would never knew if these existed). Also, I like the fact that you relate to what "teachers" skill and "Instructional Designers" skills are related so that it gives me a encouragement about self-qualification about the role.

Being a classroom teacher who just finished quarter 2 at school, I purchased this course in October. I have been able to stop and review, complete projects and learn on my timeline. It has really been while I was on Thanksgiving and Christmas break! My goal was to finish the course before the New Year and I did that!
